Jax Mercantile – Broomfield, CO
As I mentioned last month, we got the opportunity to engineer a timber frame entry for a new Jax Outdoor Gear, Ranch & Home store in Broomfield, CO. The architect on this is Peter Stewart of Stewart Architecture in Louisville, CO. Peter and I worked together several years ago on a large residential addition and remodel in Boulder. So, when he called and asked If I was interested in another project, I said “yes” before I even saw the drawings!
However, there was already another timber frame company contracted to fabricate the timbers. It was Steve Rundquist from Brewster Timber Frame Company in Bellvue, CO. I’ve talked to Steve on a few occasions over the years, but this was the first time we got to work together. I’m glad to say it was a pleasant experience. Steve proposed a few connection details and with just a handful of calcs a few minor tweaks, the deign was complete.
Even though this was a relatively small and simple project, the opportunity to work with Peter Stewart again and establish a relationship with Steve Rundquist and Brewster Timber Frames made it worth while.
Custom Home in Longmont, CO
Last week, we were also able to finish up the engineering & structural drawings for the Evans Residence in Longmont, CO. Although there were no timbers in this semi-contemporary design, it still had it’s own set of challenges. The client’s decision to incorporate a drilled pier & grade beam foundation in lieu of a massive over-excavation and reconditioned fill option will prove to be a wise one.
Once again, the use of Visual Analysis was an invaluable tool in designing the foundation. Permit drawings have been issued and now the long wait with the Boulder County Building Department begins!
Upcoming Projects
While trying to wrap up a project in Erie, CO, we’re also in negotiations with a client who’s looking to build a 3,000+ square foot timber frame custom home in Arvada, CO, which will have amazing views of both Stanley Lake and the flat irons of South Boulder. This project will include full design & engineering to start, and possibly timber fabrication & installation down the road. We’re excited about this one!
Two more potential projects, the design & fabrication of a timber entry with decorative timber gable trusses for a new custom residence in Golden, and the engineering of a new custom home in Denver are also in the works. We look forward to sharing some photos in future posts as these projects get built.
